PGDM IB department successfully organised a workshop on Power BI for the students of batch (2024-26), on the 16th and 17th of March 2025 by Mr. Sumit Gulati, the Founder of FinExcel Academy. The workshop provided valuable insights into Power BI as a visualization and business intelligence tool, emphasizing its role in data analysis, reporting, and dashboard creation.
Key Learnings from the Workshop
The workshop was designed to focus on four key areas of Power BI applications:
1. Understanding Power BI and Its Applications
The session began with a foundational understanding of Power BI, covering its core
functions:
- Data cleaning
- Data modeling
- Data visualization
- Report and dashboard creation
The students explored the difference between Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service,
understanding how the service automates repetitive tasks and enhances collaboration.
2. The Power of Power Query and Power Pivot
The session focused on two major aspects- Power Query plus Power Pivot.
- Power Query: Key learning outcomes of the session were
- How to clean, merge, and transform data before analysis
- 700 functions for advanced data manipulation
- Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process that Power BI follows.
- Power Pivot and Data Modeling: Key learning outcomes were
- Established relationships between tables to enable accurate
calculations.
- Worked with DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) for custom
calculations and measures.
3. Power Views Data Visualization
With a strong foundation in data preparation, the session on to Power View, where the
students:
- Created dynamic tables, charts, and graphs to enhance data presentation.
- Designed an extensive 15-page report, showcasing different visualization
techniques.
- Understood the importance of drill-down functionality for detailed analysis.
- Learned to use buttons and interactive elements to enhance navigation and
create holistic, user-friendly dashboards.
4. Practical Application and Evaluation
To consolidate the learning, the students participated in a quiz and a practical exam,
applying the newly acquired skills in real-time scenarios. This hands-on approach
strengthened the grasp on the subject and tested their understanding of Power Query,
Power Pivot, and Power View.
Conclusion
The workshop was an engaging and enriching experience, thanks to Mr. Sumit
Gulati’s interactive teaching style. His ability to break down complex concepts into
easily understandable segments kept the students engaged throughout.
