JIMS Rohini Organized visit to the Amul Sabar Dairy plan

PGDM Department organized an industrial visit to the Amul Sabar Dairy plant in Rohtak, Haryana on 23rd Aug 2024 for PGDM Batch (2024-26) Sec C students. This visit was thoughtfully arranged to provide our students with a first-hand experience of the operations behind Amul, a brand synonymous with quality dairy products. The primary objective was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world industry practices.

The students were welcomed at the plant with a video documentary that introduced them to Amul’s remarkable journey. They learned how Amul, which began as a cooperative society formed by milkmen, has grown into a global leader in the dairy industry. This set the context for the students' exploration of the plant’s operations.

During the tour, the students observed the milk procurement process, which occurs in three critical stages: Village Level Collection (VLC), District Level Collection (DLC), and the final delivery to the plant. They noted that each stage plays a crucial role in ensuring the high quality of the milk. Once the milk reaches the plant, it undergoes rigorous quality checks and pasteurization, sometimes even twice, to extend its shelf life. The students were particularly interested in the Tetra Pak milk process, where ultra-high temperature (UHT) treatment allows the milk to have a shelf life of up to six months without refrigeration—much longer than regular packaged milk.

As they continued the visit, the students closely observed the packaging process, noting Amul’s strict commitment to hygiene and quality. The ice cream manufacturing unit was a highlight for many, with the plant producing a wide range of flavors and a daily production capacity of 100,000 litres.

The students also gathered insights into Amul’s future plans during their visit. They learned that the Rohtak plant is planning to expand its capacity, aiming to nearly double its current production levels. Currently, the plant processes 6 lakh litres per day (LLPD) of milk, packs 5 LLPD of milk, produces 20 metric tons per day (MTPD) of Masti Dahi, 100,000 litres per day (PLTD) of Butter Milk, 20,000 litres per day (TLPD) of Lassi, and 3 MTPD of Yoghurt.

In addition to its dairy operations, the students discovered that Amul is making significant strides into the organic food sector. They learned that Amul has initiated a new venture in Gujarat, where the company is developing a dedicated plant focused on producing organic food products. This move into the organic sector is part of Amul's broader strategy to diversify its offerings and meet the growing consumer demand for healthier, natural food options. The students recognized this as a strategic expansion beyond traditional dairy products, positioning Amul as a key player in the emerging organic food market.

Overall, the visit to the Amul Sabar Dairy plant was a valuable experience for the students, providing them with practical insights into both the dairy industry and Amul's future expansion into the organic food sector. This experience aligns with our department's commitment to

bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical industry exposure, ensuring that our students are well-prepared for their future careers.
