The Generation Green Campaign (Gen G) Awareness Session an initiative by AICTE and OPPO India by Ruchi Khanna Arora, Program head, 1M1B(1Million for 1Billion), organized at JIMS, Rohini Sector-5, New Delhi, on August 27, 2024 aimed at inspiring and empowering youth to champion sustainability through the development of green skills and actions. The session was attended by students of the PGDM RM program, and it served as a launchpad for a macro-movement towards sustainability driven by the power of youth.
The session began at 3:15 pm with an introduction to the core objectives of the Generation Green campaign, which includes mobilizing 10 lakh youth across India to pledge their commitment to a sustainable future. It emphasized the importance of creating a macro-movement towards sustainability, driven by youth power. The campaign aims to empower students with green skills through a range of activities and awareness programs over 100 days.
Focus on E-Waste Management: India is the third-largest generator of e-waste in the world, with states like Maharashtra and cities such as Bhopal facing significant challenges in managing electronic waste. Even globally, countries like Ghana are struggling with the harmful effects of improper-waste disposal. The session shed light on the impact of e-waste on health, highlighting the hazardous chemicals and toxins released when electronic products are not disposed of properly. These toxins can lead to severe health issues such as respiratory problems, neurological disorders, and skin diseases. Proper disposal of e-waste and adherence to the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3Rs) were emphasized as critical actions for minimizing the adverse effects of e-waste on human health and the environment.
Ms. Arora underscored that the environmental challenges we face, such as climate change, pollution, and waste management, are also opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and societal transformation. The campaign encourages the youth to see these challenges as opportunities to develop creative solutions and leverage new-age tools and mindsets to address them effectively.
OPPO India, in partnership with AICTE, is offering 5,000 internships for students to actively participate in this green revolution. These internships aim to empower college students by engaging them in activities that raise awareness about e-waste management and sustainability. Rewards for participation include certificates from OPPO India and AICTE, special prizes for the top 100 interns, and an exclusive visit to the OPPO India Super Factory. The top 500 interns will receive additional rewards, including OPPO India goodies and weekly showcases on various platforms.
The session concluded with a pledge to create a positive impact on our planet through our green actions and advocate for a sustainable future as a green champion and encouraging students to join the movement and actively participate in the Generation Green campaign. By doing so, they can become green champions, advocating for a cleaner, greener, and healthier India.
